San Diego may be famous for beaches and sunshine, but just a short drive inland you'll find mountain towns, oak forests and scenic parks that come alive with beautiful fall color.
If you're visiting San Diego in late October through mid-November, consider adding a fall day trip to your vacation plans. Higher elevations generally change first, so timing can vary depending on weather and elevation each year.
Where to Find San Diego Fall Colors
1. Palomar Mountain State Park
Hike through mountain scenery, golden oaks and forested trails while enjoying some of the best higher-elevation fall color in San Diego County.
2. Cuyamaca Rancho State Park
Cuyamaca is one of our favorite fall destinations, where black oaks often turn brilliant shades of yellow and gold.
3. Lake Cuyamaca
Golden oak trees reflected across the lake make this an especially beautiful spot for fall photos and a relaxing afternoon outdoors.
4. Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve
Near Julian, the Five Oaks Trail winds through beautiful countryside and impressive stands of mature oak trees.
5. William Heise County Park
Explore trails surrounded by oak, pine and cedar trees, with plenty of opportunities for hiking, picnicking and enjoying crisp mountain air.
6. Mount Laguna
The Laguna Mountain Recreation Area offers scenic drives, hiking trails, meadows and pine-and-oak woodland that can be especially beautiful in autumn.
7. Julian Historic District
Combine fall foliage with small-town charm. Walk historic Main Street, browse local shops and, of course, enjoy a slice of Julian's famous apple pie.
8. Santa Ysabel East Preserve
Rolling grasslands, mature sycamores and oak trees create a peaceful fall landscape just outside Julian.
9. Dos Picos County Park
Located near Ramona, this quiet park features ancient oak groves, picnic areas, a pond and easy trails perfect for a relaxed fall outing.
10. Felicita County Park
This shaded Escondido park is filled with mature oak trees, a year-round creek and miles of walking trails.

Fall color around San Diego's mountains typically begins appearing in late October and can continue through mid-November. Higher elevations usually change first, and conditions can vary from year to year.
Make It a San Diego Fall Day Trip
One of the best things about staying near the San Diego coast is how quickly the scenery can change. You can spend the morning at the beach, drive into the mountains for fall colors and apple pie, and still make it back in time for a sunset along the Pacific.
