About San Diego

Welcome to San Diego — where laid-back beach culture, year-round outdoor living and the energy of a major city come together along one of Southern California's most beautiful stretches of coastline.

With approximately 70 miles of coastline, famous beaches, waterfront neighborhoods, world-class attractions and an incredible food scene, San Diego makes it easy to build a vacation around whatever you love most. Spend the morning surfing, the afternoon exploring museums or neighborhoods, and the evening watching the sun disappear into the Pacific.

Nancy's Vacation Rentals offers vacation homes in some of San Diego's most desirable coastal communities, putting guests close to the beach while keeping Downtown, La Jolla, Balboa Park and many of the city's top attractions within easy reach.

San Diego Neighborhoods to Explore

Mission Beach

For the classic Southern California beach experience, it's hard to beat Mission Beach. Miles of sand meet a lively oceanfront boardwalk where visitors bike, skate, walk and people-watch.

Belmont Park, beach volleyball, surfing and nearby Mission Bay make this one of San Diego's best neighborhoods for families and travelers who want to spend as much time outside as possible.

Pacific Beach

Just north of Mission Beach, Pacific Beach — or "PB" to locals — combines a wide sandy beach with restaurants, coffee shops, nightlife and one of San Diego's most popular stretches of boardwalk.

Head toward Crystal Pier for quintessential coastal views, grab a bike and cruise the boardwalk, or simply find a spot in the sand and stay for sunset.

La Jolla

La Jolla offers a more refined coastal experience with dramatic cliffs, secluded coves, excellent restaurants, boutiques and some of the region's most memorable ocean views.

Visit La Jolla Cove to see the coastline and marine life, explore the sea caves by kayak or hike the trails at Torrey Pines.

Ocean Beach & Point Loma

Ocean Beach has retained much of its funky, independent surf-town personality, with local shops, casual restaurants and a decidedly laid-back atmosphere.

Nearby Point Loma offers spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and San Diego Bay. Make time for Sunset Cliffs, particularly around sunset.

Downtown, Little Italy & the Gaslamp Quarter

San Diego's urban side is only minutes from the coast. Downtown offers waterfront attractions, Petco Park and the historic Gaslamp Quarter, while Little Italy has become one of the city's premier dining destinations.

The Embarcadero is perfect for a waterfront walk, with museums, harbor cruises and Seaport Village along the way.

Things You Shouldn't Miss in San Diego

First-time visitors should leave some room in the itinerary for Balboa Park, San Diego's cultural heart and home to gardens, museums, beautiful Spanish-inspired architecture and the world-famous San Diego Zoo.

Spend at least one full day at the beach — Mission Beach is a great place to start — and make time to explore La Jolla Cove and the surrounding coastline.

For history, visit Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, where preserved and reconstructed buildings tell the story of San Diego's Mexican and early American periods.

Local Tip: Don't underestimate the simple experiences. Walk the boardwalk in the morning, grab tacos after the beach, watch surfers from the sand and explore a neighborhood without an itinerary. Most importantly, make time for at least one Pacific sunset.

Eat Like a Local

San Diego's food scene goes far beyond traditional tourist destinations. Mexican and Cali-Baja cuisine are an essential part of the experience, and you'll find everything from neighborhood taco shops to chef-driven restaurants throughout the city.

Seafood & Waterfront Dining

Seafood is a natural choice in San Diego. For a classic waterfront experience near the Embarcadero, The Fish Market combines fresh seafood with a location overlooking San Diego Bay.

Casual San Diego Favorites

For something casual and unmistakably San Diego, head to Ocean Beach and try Hodad's for an oversized burger after a day at the beach.

Dinner with a View

Coasterra offers Mexican-inspired waterfront dining with sweeping views of the Downtown skyline, while Cannonball overlooks the ocean and boardwalk in Mission Beach.

Nancy's Tip: Don't plan every meal before you arrive. Some of the best San Diego discoveries are neighborhood taco shops, coffee houses, breweries and small restaurants you stumble across along the way.

Best Time to Visit San Diego

Spring

Spring brings comfortable temperatures, wildflowers and fewer peak-summer crowds, making it a great season for sightseeing, hiking and beach days.

Summer

Summer is prime beach season, with long days, warm weather and plenty happening throughout the city. May and June can bring the coastal marine layer locals call "May Gray" and "June Gloom," particularly during the morning.

Late Summer & Fall

Late summer and fall are local favorites. August through October often bring beautiful beach weather, warmer ocean temperatures and fewer crowds once the peak summer travel period ends.

Winter

Winter is mild compared with most of the country and can be a fantastic time for sightseeing, hiking and exploring San Diego without summer crowds.

What to Pack: Even when the daytime forecast looks warm, bring a light jacket or sweatshirt. Temperatures along the coast can cool quickly after sunset.

Getting Around San Diego

San Diego is spread out, so the best transportation option depends on what you plan to do.

Walking & Biking

Guests staying in Mission Beach or Pacific Beach can walk or bike to beaches, restaurants and neighborhood attractions. The oceanfront boardwalk makes it especially easy to explore the coastal communities without getting in the car.

Rental Cars & Rideshare

Rideshare services are convenient for evenings out or shorter trips. A rental car is useful if you plan to explore La Jolla, Torrey Pines, North County, Cabrillo National Monument or several different parts of the region during the same trip.

Public Transportation

San Diego's Trolley connects Downtown with Old Town, Mission Valley, UC San Diego and communities throughout the region, while the COASTER provides rail service along the North County coastline.

San Diego International Airport

San Diego International Airport is exceptionally convenient for a major city airport and is located only minutes from Downtown.

Travelers can also use public transportation and shuttle connections to reach Old Town Transit Center, where connections are available to the Trolley, buses, COASTER and Amtrak.

Local Tips for Your San Diego Vacation

  • Arrive at the beach early. Parking near San Diego beaches can become difficult on summer weekends and holidays.
  • Walk or bike when possible. In Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, leaving the car parked can often be easier than driving short distances.
  • The Pacific can be chilly. Ocean temperatures vary considerably throughout the year, and surfers commonly wear wetsuits outside the warmest months.
  • Don't skip sunscreen on cloudy mornings. San Diego's coastal marine layer often burns away later in the day.
  • Give yourself extra time. Some of the best San Diego vacation memories come from slowing down rather than trying to check another attraction off the list.
