Walk inside Craft & Commerce and you're already in a wonderfully eccentric space filled with books, dark wood, taxidermy and dramatic décor.

But that's not where we're going.

There's Another World Hiding Inside

False Idol is concealed beyond an entrance inside the Craft & Commerce complex.

Earlier descriptions famously characterized the entrance as hidden through a walk-in cooler.

Whatever you expect to find on the other side...

you're probably wrong.

Because this isn't a bar with a few tiki decorations.

It's an environment.

Welcome to the Grotto

The transition is what makes False Idol work.

You leave modern Little Italy behind and enter a dark, intensely detailed tropical world.

Rock walls.

Carved masks.

Ropes.

Nautical floats.

Pufferfish.

Skulls.

Water.

Fire.

And almost no visual reminder that you're actually sitting in downtown San Diego.

There Is an Indoor Waterfall

Because apparently a normal wall wasn't interesting enough.

False Idol incorporates a waterfall into its grotto-like interior, helping create the illusion that you've wandered into some strange tropical hideaway.

Despite looking like something discovered beneath a Polynesian hotel built in 1958, False Idol opened in 2016.

It was created by San Diego hospitality group Consortium Holdings in partnership with acclaimed tiki expert and author Martin Cate, best known for San Francisco's Smuggler's Cove.

The goal wasn't simply to create a tropical-themed cocktail bar.
