SAN DIEGO HIDDEN GEMS — A LOCAL GUIDE
The Ultimate Guide to San Diego Craft Breweries: Welcome to the Capital of CraftMore than 150 independent craft beer manufacturers. Legendary IPAs. Tiny neighborhood tasting rooms. Beachside brewpubs. Baseball legends. Rock guitar heroes. And one incredible beer city.
San Diego isn't simply a city that likes beer.
Craft beer has become part of San Diego culture.
From Miramar warehouses and North Park tasting rooms to Ocean Beach brewpubs and waterfront beer gardens, San Diego County has developed one of the most influential craft beer scenes in America.
According to the San Diego Brewers Guild, the region is home to more than 150 independent craft beer manufacturers.
That's enough beer to turn an ordinary San Diego vacation into what locals proudly call a:
BEERCATION. 🍺
So where should you start?
Grab a designated driver, call a rideshare and come thirsty.
We're exploring some of the breweries that helped build San Diego's beer culture — along with the newer generation carrying it forward.
🍺 How San Diego Became the Capital of Craft
San Diego's modern craft beer story really began gaining momentum in the late 1980s and 1990s.
Karl Strauss opened in 1989. Pizza Port began brewing in the early 1990s. Soon names such as AleSmith, Ballast Point, Coronado Brewing and Stone joined the movement.
In 1997, local breweries came together to form the San Diego Brewers Guild.
What followed was remarkable.
San Diego brewers became known for pushing boundaries — particularly with aggressively hopped West Coast IPAs, imperial stouts and experimental beers.
Homebrewers became professional brewers.
Tiny tasting rooms became internationally recognized breweries.
Industrial neighborhoods such as Miramar became legitimate beer destinations.
And San Diego eventually earned a reputation around the world as one of America's great craft beer cities.
Today, San Diego proudly calls itself the:
CAPITAL OF CRAFT. 🍺
⭐ NANCY'S LOCAL SPOTLIGHT ⭐
🍺 AleSmith Brewing Company — Miramar
Great Beer, Great People & Two Incredible Stories
📍 9990 AleSmith Court, San Diego
If we're going to start anywhere, we're starting with AleSmith.
Not only is AleSmith one of San Diego's pioneering craft breweries, but owners Peter and Vicky Zien are also good friends of ours here at Nancy's Vacation Rentals.
We've had the pleasure of knowing the people behind the brewery, which makes watching AleSmith become such an important part of San Diego's craft beer culture especially meaningful.
But friendship aside, AleSmith has earned its reputation.
The brewery has become internationally respected for everything from hop-forward pale ales to enormous barrel-aged stouts.
And two AleSmith collaborations tell an even bigger story about San Diego.
One involves one of the greatest hitters in baseball history.
The other involves one of rock music's great guitar players.
Let's start with Mr. Padre.
⚾ The Incredible Story Behind AleSmith .394
This isn't simply a beer with Tony Gwynn's name attached to it.
Tony helped create it.
In 2014, San Diego Padres Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn approached AleSmith about collaborating on a beer.
AleSmith owners Peter and Vicky Zien got together with Tony and his family, beginning with an informal beer tasting at the Gwynn home.
Tony had a pretty good idea of what he wanted.
Something light — but with a kick.
AleSmith developed several test batches, and the Gwynn family helped provide feedback until they landed on the winner.
The result was a golden pale ale with American hop character, tropical fruit and citrus aromas, restrained bitterness and a slightly sweet malty finish.
Then came the name.
San Diego Pale Ale .394
Baseball fans immediately understand the significance.
During the strike-shortened 1994 Major League Baseball season, Tony Gwynn hit an extraordinary:
.394.
Gwynn was chasing one of baseball's most elusive achievements — a .400 batting average.
No Major League player had finished a season at .400 since Ted Williams hit .406 in 1941.
Tony finished at .394.
It became one of the most famous numbers in San Diego sports history.
And eventually, one of the most recognizable numbers in San Diego beer.
A Bittersweet Beginning
The beer debuted in 2014.
Tragically, Tony Gwynn passed away only days after its official release at Padres Beerfest.
According to AleSmith's account of the collaboration, Tony had been proud of the way fans responded to the beer.
After Tony's death, Peter Zien spoke with Tony's wife, Alicia, about whether AleSmith should continue producing it.
The Gwynn family's answer was clear:
Keep Tony's dream alive.
AleSmith did exactly that.
Today, .394 remains a year-round AleSmith beer and an enduring tribute to Mr. Padre, baseball and the city Tony loved.
AleSmith has also expanded the .394 family with additional releases, including Hazy .394.
A portion of proceeds from .394 also supports the Tony and Alicia Gwynn Foundation.
For us, that's what makes this beer special.
It's not just great San Diego beer. It's part of San Diego's story.
🎸 From Mr. Padre to a Guitar Hero: Gary Hoey's “Summer's Here”
Tony Gwynn isn't the only legend to collaborate with AleSmith.
This next story is particularly personal for us at Nancy's Vacation Rentals.
Legendary rock guitarist Gary Hoey is a dear friend of ours — and in 2025, AleSmith teamed up with Gary to create a beer of his own.
The result was:
🎸🍺 Summer's Here — a West Coast-style Pale Ale.
The beer was inspired by Gary's song Summer's Here and brewed as a collaboration between Gary and AleSmith.
Made with Mosaic hops, the 6% ABV pale ale delivers bright citrus and tropical-fruit character with a crisp finish — basically summer in San Diego in a glass.
And the name couldn't be more appropriate.
Gary Hoey has spent decades combining rock guitar with the energy of Southern California surf culture.
In fact, Gary composed and performed music for the soundtrack to the 1994 surf film The Endless Summer II.
More than 30 years later, that same surf-and-summer energy found its way into a San Diego craft beer.
🍺🎸 And Of Course They Threw a Party
A beer created with a rock guitarist deserves something better than an ordinary release.
So on July 12, 2025, AleSmith celebrated the release of Summer's Here at its Miramar brewery with a special event and live music.
Gary performed alongside his talented son Ian Hoey, helping turn the brewery into a summer rock-and-roll celebration.
The event also incorporated a school-supply drive benefiting children from underserved communities.
That's one of the things we love about AleSmith.
The brewery doesn't simply put someone's name on a can.
It creates collaborations around people, stories, music, sports and community.
⚾ + 🎸 Two Beers. Two Very Different San Diego Stories.
Think about these collaborations side by side.
Tony Gwynn's .394 celebrates one of the greatest hitters in baseball history and one of San Diego's most beloved athletes.
Gary Hoey's Summer's Here combines rock guitar, surf culture, summer and craft beer.
Baseball and rock & roll.
Petco Park and electric guitars.
Hops and Southern California sunshine.
They're completely different stories — yet somehow both feel perfectly San Diego.
And for us at Nancy's, they're even more meaningful because we've been fortunate to know the people behind them.
That's why AleSmith isn't just another brewery on this list. It's our featured brewery for a reason.
What Else Should You Try at AleSmith?
Don't stop at .394 or Summer's Here.
AleSmith has earned a devoted following for beers ranging from hop-forward ales and lagers to huge barrel-aged stouts.
The legendary Speedway Stout family is particularly well known among serious craft beer fans.
The Miramar brewery also offers a large tasting room, rotating releases, food, special events and plenty of room to settle in for an afternoon.
Nancy's Local Take: If you only have time to visit a handful of San Diego breweries, AleSmith belongs on the list.
🍺 Ballast Point Brewing — A San Diego Original
Ballast Point's roots go back to San Diego's homebrewing movement of the early 1990s.
Its Home Brew Mart helped give local homebrewers access to ingredients, equipment and knowledge at a time when San Diego's craft brewing industry was still in its infancy.
Some of those homebrewers eventually became professional brewers themselves.
Ballast Point would go on to become nationally known, particularly for Sculpin IPA, one of the beers that helped introduce drinkers around the country to San Diego's hop-forward brewing style.
For visitors, Ballast Point remains an important stop because you're tasting a piece of San Diego craft beer history.
🍺 Stone Brewing — The Brewery That Refused to Be Subtle
If early San Diego craft beer had an attitude, Stone helped define it.
Big hops. Big flavors. Big personality.
Stone became one of the breweries most closely associated with the rise of aggressive West Coast craft beer.
For visitors staying near the coast, Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens at Liberty Station offers one of San Diego's most memorable brewery environments.
The sprawling indoor-outdoor space combines craft beer, food, gardens and the historic architecture of the former Naval Training Center.
Make a day of it: Explore Liberty Station and its Arts District, then finish with a beer.
🍺 Karl Strauss Brewing Company — One of the Pioneers
You can't tell the story of modern San Diego beer without Karl Strauss.
Founded in 1989, Karl Strauss helped introduce locally brewed craft beer to San Diegans before the region became famous for it.
Decades later, the brewery remains woven into the fabric of San Diego's beer culture.
If you're interested in understanding where the modern San Diego craft beer movement came from, Karl Strauss belongs in the history lesson.
🍕🍺 Pizza Port — Pizza, Beer & Pure Southern California
This one just feels like San Diego.
Pizza Port started in Solana Beach in 1987 and began brewing beer in 1992.
The formula is wonderfully simple:
Great craft beer + pizza + beach-town atmosphere.
For Nancy's guests staying near Ocean Beach, Pizza Port OB is especially convenient — just a short walk from the beach.
Order a pizza, grab a flight and embrace the controlled chaos.
That's Ocean Beach.
🍺 Coronado Brewing Company — Island Beer
Coronado Brewing opened its original Coronado brewpub in 1996 and became another early player in San Diego's craft beer movement.
Its coastal identity fits the location perfectly.
Beer, food and a day exploring Coronado make this one of the easiest brewery experiences to incorporate into a San Diego vacation.
Perfect pairing: Coronado Beach during the day and a local craft beer afterward.
🌎🍺 Pure Project — Craft Beer With a Conscience
Pure Project represents a newer generation of San Diego breweries.
It has developed a strong following for hazy IPAs, lagers, barrel-aged beers, experimental releases and beautifully designed tasting rooms.
The brewery also places sustainability at the center of its identity and participates in environmental initiatives including 1% for the Planet.
Pure Project has expanded its presence around San Diego County, making it relatively easy to work a tasting room into your itinerary.
Visitor tip: Its Balboa Park-area location makes an excellent stop after exploring one of San Diego's most famous attractions.
🍺 North Park Beer Company — Neighborhood Brewery Done Right
North Park Beer Company opened in 2016 and quickly became one of the city's most respected neighborhood breweries.
Hop lovers will find plenty to explore, but the brewery also produces lagers, strong ales and other styles.
Its flagship brewery sits on University Avenue in the middle of North Park — one of San Diego's best neighborhoods for restaurants, cocktails, music and nightlife.
Best strategy: Don't make North Park Beer Company your only stop.
Make North Park your brewery crawl.
🍺 Societe Brewing Company — Serious Beer Without the Pretension
Societe has built a loyal following from its Kearny Mesa brewery by focusing on quality and consistency.
The brewery has become particularly associated with West Coast IPAs while producing a broad range of other styles.
The large tasting room and production brewery give visitors the classic San Diego industrial-neighborhood brewery experience.
🌅🍺 Eppig Brewing Waterfront Biergarten — Beer With a View
Some brewery visits are about what's in the glass.
This one is also about what's beyond it.
Eppig's Waterfront Biergarten in Point Loma sits along the marina, giving visitors the chance to enjoy craft beer with boats, water and San Diego sunshine as the backdrop.
Eppig has become particularly popular with lager drinkers.
Nancy's tip: Go around sunset.
🍺 Deft Brewing — When You Need a Break From IPA
San Diego loves hops.
Maybe a little too much.
Deft Brewing offers a refreshing counterpoint, with an emphasis on European-inspired beer styles from Germany, Belgium and the British Isles.
It's a great stop for visitors looking for something beyond another double IPA.
⚾🍺 East Village Brewing Company — Beer Near Petco Park
If you're heading to a Padres game, here's another brewery worth knowing.
East Village Brewing Company sits just steps from Petco Park and produces small-batch beer right in Downtown San Diego.
It's an easy addition to a baseball day:
Local beer → Padres game → Gaslamp.
That's a pretty solid San Diego afternoon.
🍻 And We're Just Getting Started...
The remarkable thing about writing a San Diego brewery guide is that even after covering all of those breweries, we've barely scratched the surface.
Depending on where you're staying, you'll find breweries and tasting rooms from names such as:
- Belching Beaver Brewery
- Harland Brewing
- Thorn Brewing
- Mission Brewing
- Kilowatt Brewing
- Bay City Brewing
- Burgeon Beer Company
- Chula Vista Brewery
- Ocean Beach Brewery
- Kairoa Brewing Company
- Fall Brewing Company
- And many more
That's why trying to create a literal list of every brewery in San Diego can become outdated almost immediately.
Breweries open, close, relocate and add tasting rooms regularly.
For the most current directory, check the San Diego Brewers Guild when planning your trip.
🗺️ Build Your Own San Diego Brewery Crawl
🍺 Miramar Beer Country
If you're serious about beer, Miramar is one of the easiest places to start.
AleSmith should be your anchor.
The Miramar and Mira Mesa industrial areas became ground zero for a huge part of San Diego's craft beer explosion, with breweries and tasting rooms scattered throughout the neighborhood.
🍺 North Park Beer Crawl
North Park gives you the advantage of combining breweries with restaurants, cocktail bars, coffee shops and nightlife.
Start around University Avenue and explore from there.
🌊 Beach Brewery Crawl
For visitors staying with Nancy's near the coast, combine breweries with the beach.
Ocean Beach, Point Loma and Liberty Station provide several excellent possibilities without sacrificing your San Diego vacation time.
🍺 North County Beer Adventure
Head north and you'll discover another enormous craft beer scene throughout Vista, Carlsbad, Oceanside and surrounding communities.
⚾🎸 When San Diego Beer Becomes Part of the Story
Great craft beer is one thing.
But the best breweries become part of the culture around them.
AleSmith's collaborations with Tony Gwynn and Gary Hoey are great examples.
One beer immortalizes .394 — one of the most famous numbers in San Diego sports history.
Another turns Gary Hoey's Summer's Here into something you can actually raise in a glass.
Baseball. Rock & roll. Surf culture. Craft beer. San Diego.
It's hard to imagine a more Southern California combination.
So if you're visiting AleSmith and order a .394, raise your glass to Mr. Padre.
And if you happen to find a Summer's Here release?
Turn up the guitar. 🎸🍺
🍺 Nancy's Local Brewery Tips
- Don't try to visit too many. Three or four breweries can easily fill an afternoon.
- Order flights. You'll experience more styles without ordering full pints.
- Check food options. Some breweries have kitchens while others use rotating food trucks.
- Check current hours. Tasting-room schedules can change.
- Don't assume every brewery is dog-friendly. Policies vary by location and seating area.
- Use a rideshare or designated driver. San Diego's brewery neighborhoods are spread across a large area.
- Try something besides IPA. San Diego brewers make exceptional lagers, stouts, sours, Belgian-inspired beers and more.
